Returning to the Wild (Queenscliff Series)

A series of site-responsive projection works developed across Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. Using a portable projection system, animations originally created for large-scale festival display were recontextualised into temporary installations embedded within coastal environments. Each projection engages directly with the physical and ecological characteristics of its site, transforming everyday structures into animated surfaces.

Bomb Shelter - Marine Projection

Projection study onto a coastal concrete structure near Point Lonsdale, featuring collaged cuttlefish imagery sourced from the surrounding marine environment.

Swan Bay Van - Mobile Projection

A projection study integrating animation with a mobile surface, situated within the Swan Bay landscape it references.

Tree - Avian Projection

Site-responsive projection onto a coastal tree, animating native bird species including wattlebirds, cockatoos, and galahs.

Concept

This series extends earlier animation research into spatial and environmental contexts. Rather than treating projection as a neutral display format, each work responds to the material and ecological identity of its location from marine habitats to urban and natural structures. The works explore how digital collage animation can inhabit physical space, creating temporary intersections between moving image, landscape, and architecture.

Process

The projections were developed using a fully portable, off-grid system, allowing installations to be deployed in remote or non-traditional locations. Source material consists of macro photography and environmental stills captured in Queenscliff and surrounding coastal areas. These materials are transformed into looping animations and mapped onto site-specific surfaces including architectural structures, vegetation, and mobile objects. Each work is documented through video and photographic capture, forming part of an ongoing series of projection-based studies.

This projection system and methodology is adaptable for festivals, public art programs, music events, and site-specific installations.
